The Wind River Range (or "Winds" for short), is a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains in western Wyoming in the United States. The range runs roughly NW-SE for approximately 100 miles (161 km). The Continental Divide follows the crest of the range and includes Gannett Peak, which at 13,804 feet (4,207 m), is the highest peak in Wyoming. There are more than 40 other named peaks in excess of 13,000 feet (3,962 m). Two large National Forests including three wilderness areas encompass most of the mountain range. Shoshone National Forest is on the eastern side of the continental divide while the Bridger-Teton National Forestis on the west. Both National Forests and the entire mountain range are an integral part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Portions of the range are also inside the Wind River Indian Reservation, also known as the Shoshone/Arapahoe Indian Reservation.

1838 Rendezvous, Riverton
Held annually the weekend preceding and up to July 4
The area around present-day Riverton was home to two rendezvous, in 1830 and 1838. Lending the modern event a particularly historic air, the camp used today is the same one used over 150 years ago. Pitch your teepee or modern tin-teepee under the same cottonwoods as the real mountain men did (or update tradition by staying in an area hotel). Then venture out for knife- and tomahawk-throwing contests and demonstrations, crafts, kids games and campfire singing.

Lander is a city in, and the county seat of, Fremont County, Wyoming. Named for transcontinental explorer Frederick W. Lander.
Lander is located in central Wyoming, along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. A tourism center with several dude ranches nearby, Lander is located just south of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The population was 6,867 at the 2000 census.

Fremont county census 2009 estimate.

Outdoor Life magazine ranked
Lander in the top 20 towns for
hunters and fishermen in its
June/July 2010 issue.

Lander, WY
With the Wind River Range providing
a dramatic background west of town
and high-desert plains unfurling to
the east, Lander is sandwiched
between two ideal big-game habitats.

Every fall, Landerites venture into
the Winds in search of elk, moose,
black bears, cougars and bighorn
sheep. Mule deer and antelope
are plentiful in the plains.
